Dans un port du nord de l’Afrique, quelque part aux portes du désert, des hommes s’affairent sur le pont d’un vieux bateau de pêche. Maillons solidaires d’un corps puissant aux gestes d’une sidérante agilité. Ces types fatigués, aux cheveux hirsutes et à la barbe drue, alignés depuis le pont jusque sur le quai du port des dizaines de mètres plus loin, se balancent des cageots de poissons sortis du ventre du bateau. Les hommes, insouciants de leur sort, chantent, crient, s’invectivent et s’amusent d’un rien. La nuit succède au jour, le travail au travail et le labeur ne s’arrête jamais.

In a North African port, somewhere on the threshold of the desert, men are busy on the deck of an old trawler. Their movements are coordinated to form one, amazingly agile, body. Tired, shaggy-haired and unshaven, they throw each other cases of fish brought up from the bowels of the boat, along a human chain from the deck to the quays. Apparently unconcerned about their fate, they sing, cry out and make fun of one another. Night follows day, work follows work and there is no end to toil.
