français, période emblématique de l'histoire des luttes
révolutionnaires et du mouvement ouvrier.
Juillet 1999. Montreuil.
Locaux de La Parole Errante d'Armand Gatti. Le réalisateur britannique
Peter Watkins tourne son dernier film à ce jour. Malgré un budget
restreint, et grâce à l'implication de plus de 300 comédiens et
techniciens, les habitations, rues et barricades de 1871 sont
reconstituées pour 13 jours de tournage continu, suivant le déroulement
chronologique des évènements. Dans un espace théâtralisé, la caméra
opère une description heure par heure, grâce à des prises en
plan-séquence, nous plongeant dans le vécu et les interrogations du
peuple parisien insurgé. Mais Watkins travaille bien au-delà de la
fresque historique, dans une actualité de la contestation, et cherche
avant tout à nous rappeler que l'histoire est un matériau vivant, sans
cesse en devenir, dont nous pouvons devenir les acteurs lucides et
responsables.
Fidèle à ses interrogations sur le rôle des médias
dans nos sociétés, le film suit la création d'une Télévision Communale
gérée par le peuple, pour lui donner la parole et la possibilité
d'exprimer sa vision des évènements, face à la propagande de la
Télévision Versaillaise, organe du pouvoir officiel. Au fil du film,
les acteurs révèlent peu à peu l'actualité de leurs combats, et les
interrogations politiques des Communards rejoignent ceux du peuple
français de la fin du XXème siècle.

French government, an emblematic period in the history of revolutionary
struggle and the workers' movement.
July 1999. Montreuil. The premises of Armand Gatti's La Parole Errante.
The British film director Peter Watkins is shooting his latest film to
date. In spite of a limited budget, and thanks to the involvement of
over 300 actors and technicians, the dwellings, streets and barricades
of 1871 are reconstructed for 13 days of continuous shooting, following
the chronology of events. In this theatralised space, the camera gives
an hour by hour description, using long takes, immersing the viewer in
the experience and the questions of the insurgent Parisians. But Watkins
goes far beyond the historical epic, by actualising the protest,
seeking above all to remind us that history is living matter, in
constant evolution, and that we are capable of becoming its lucid and
responsible actors.
Pursuing its reflection on the role of media in our societies, the film
relates the creation of a Communal Television run by the people,
providing them with the possibility to express their view on events as
opposed to the propaganda broadcast by Versailles Television, the
official organ of the ruling powers. As the film progresses, the actors
gradually reveal the contemporary nature of their combat. The
communards' political questioning converge with that of the French
people at the end of the 20th century.
